So what is a credit union? Is it like a bank? Is my money just as secure? Is it difficult to join?

Why a Credit Union

A credit union is virtually the same as a bank and is protected by the federal government—just a slightly different agency—but the benefits of a credit union are:

  • Member owned – Your deposit carries power. As a member you are not a depositor or have a loan, but you also are a partner allowing you share in providing direction for your credit union.
  • Not-for-profit – Unlike banks, credit unions are non-profit. This minimizes the painful fees for having an account, limits to the number of transactions, fees, etc.
  • Lower loan rates/Higher savings rates – Credit unions are known for having competitive rates to help you with borrowing or saving. This means simply more money in your pocket.

Along with the traditional benefits of a savings account, checking account, loans, etc., there are other specific benefits with being a Kingsville Area Educators Federal Credit Union (now Coastal Community And Teachers Credit Union) member:
